To the editor:
Scott Jennings raised some good points in his analysis of the extraordinary loyalty that Republicans have for President Trump. It seems that the Democratic leadership may have been unaware of the the [sic] loathing many Republicans had for Hillary Clinton or took for granted some of the voters away from the coasts.
I must take issue with Jennings’ statement that Republicans got angrier “as a succession of honorable leaders—George W. Bush, Mitt Romney, John McCain—were portrayed by the media as stupid, feeble or criminal.”
Perhaps Jennings forgot when Trump said McCain wasn’t really a war hero and that “I like people who weren’t captured.” The media may have criticized the policies of these politicians, but in general they did not criticize their heroism or personal life.
Like the vast wealth that he inherited from his father, Trump inherited a robust economy and a country that undeniably leads the world. A true test of his professed abilities hinges on his ability to maintain this admirable status during the remaining years of his presidency.

Republican Senators are overthinking tomorrow’s vote on National Emergency. It is very simply Border Security/No Crime – Should not be thought of any other way. We have a MAJOR NATIONAL EMERGENCY at our Border and the People of our Country know it very well!

Peter Berkowitz is one of my favorite public intellectuals. In this essay, he explains the important connection between conservatism and populism. Donald Trump is often derided as an authoritarian, which is laughable. He’s a populist.

Donald Trump’s approval rating is 47%. Barack Obama’s approval rating at the same point of his presidency (12 March 2011) was 47%.

Republican lawmakers are disgracing themselves, standing idly by and sometimes shamefully defending President Donald Trump.
Mr. Trump tears families apart and puts children in cages (sometimes dying in U.S. custody), does nothing to stop Russian meddling in our elections, takes the word of the Saudi Royal family and Kim Jong Un over that of our intelligence agencies after they brutally tortured and murdered a Washington Post columnist and an American college student, and has lied over 8,000 times since taking office.
Republican lawmakers, please do the right thing for once. Mr. Trump does not reflect or uphold the moral foundation of our country.
