  • Trek Domane 5.2It was bound to happen, and today it did. My daily streak of 20-mile rides has ended. Yesterday's ride in frigid conditions was my 212th in a row. When I set out from the house, the wind chill was 26 degrees. By the time I returned, an hour and a half later, the wind chill was three degrees and the wind speed was 27 miles per hour. The wind chill today never got above 12, and I was unwilling to put myself through it again. (I was worried that my fingers would get frostbitten. I had to wiggle them constantly during the ride to keep the blood flowing.) It'll be cold again tomorrow, but not, I hope, in the teens. If it's 20 degrees or higher by one o'clock, I'll go out. By the way, I'm still on track to break my personal record of 7,500.1 miles for the year. I have eight days in which to ride 137.7 miles. That's an average of only 17.2 miles per day.

P.S.: There were six days of the 212 in which I rode less than 20 miles. I rode 16 miles on five occasions and 17 miles once. If you want to be strict about it, I rode at least 20 miles 168 straight days.

P.P.S.: For the record, I rode every day (at least 16 miles) from 25 May to 22 December. I rode at least 20 miles every day from 8 July to 22 December. I rode in every kind of weather: hot (109 degrees), cold (three degrees), windy, calm, wet, and dry. I rode while healthy and while sick. I rode while seriously injured (in a bike crash on 30 August) and while feeling as strong as a bull. My bike held up fabulously well. So, thankfully, did my 65-year-old body.
