To the editor:
I am still trying to digest the results of our split-screen midterm. There are two Americas—one primarily older, white and rural, and the other younger, diverse, coastal and concentrated in cities.
President Trump sees himself the big winner, as usual. His divisive rhetoric, his ability to influence and bring together millions with false promises and blatant lies, his encouraging us to fear the other—all these have failed to unify us, but they have made us even more polarized.
I take no joy in the real probability that this turmoil may become a permanent aspect of American life. Divided government may prove to be an exclamation point on how we face the future, always blaming and vilifying those on the other side of our split screen, left and right.

According to NBC News, Voters Nationwide Disapprove of the so-called Mueller Investigation (46%) more than they Approve (41%). You mean they are finally beginning to understand what a disgusting Witch Hunt, led by 17 Angry Democrats, is all about!

On Oct. 26, I watched a news show that talked about the neo-Nazi and white supremacist groups forming and recruiting throughout the country. They are self-proclaimed fighters for Donald Trump. They show up when peaceful demonstrations are taking place that are critical of the president and the groups use violence while carrying huge flags with Mr. Trump’s name displayed.
I am not suggesting the president approves of this, but I have never heard him condemn these actions, ask that they stop this behavior or speak out against the violence. Instead, the president never passes up the chance to drive up hatred and fear toward those opposed to him.
Then, the next day, I learned of the horrible mass shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in Squirrel Hill. I felt so sick inside. What does the president suggest? That perhaps an armed guard should have been outside the synagogue. Not a word to calm the anger and hate that are growing in this country that he seems to enjoy perpetuating at his constant rallies.
Is that the answer to living in this country now? That we must all be surrounded by armed guards to protect ourselves from those that see things differently than we do? Are those the consoling words that those in Squirrel Hill need to hear from this president? Arm yourselves? I no longer recognize this country and it fills me with deep sorrow.
