  • Rick Steves’ newest PBS show, “The Story of Fascism in Europe” was previewed at the Egyptian Theatre recently. It chillingly recounts the step-by-step process that destroyed liberal democracy, and millions of lives, in Europe in the 1930s and ’40s, and it left viewers re-examining current trends in present-day politics of lies, confrontation and polarization in our society.

The audience came away reminded of how charismatic, flamboyant political leadership then pitted people against each other, laid blame by creating enemies within, and played to people’s fears and wants by oversimplification of solutions to complex issues. The gradual process of eliminating the checks and balances of liberal democracy crept up on people while they were hoping leaders’ promises would come true for them personally—and then it was too late.

“The Story of Fascism in Europe” runs on KCTS at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, and at several other times through November. It should not be missed by thinking people who are even vaguely aware that history, in fact, can repeat itself.

  • A very big part of the Anger we see today in our society is caused by the purposely false and inaccurate reporting of the Mainstream Media that I refer to as Fake News. It has gotten so bad and hateful that it is beyond description. Mainstream Media must clean up its act, FAST!

  • Academics love John Rawls's theory of justice and hate Robert Nozick's theory. What explains this? I think it's simple. John Rawls produced a theory for the timid, while Nozick produced a theory for the bold. Academics tend to be timid. Academia attracts the timid.

So says Nate Silver, who averred, on election eve 2016, that it was highly probable that Hillary Clinton would be elected president. I, your humble blogger, say that Republicans will retain control of both houses of Congress. Click to enlarge.

  • To the editor:

Last week, as he flew off to another campaign rally, President Trump finally conceded that Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi is “probably dead.” He even admitted that “it’s sad.”

At his campaign rally in Montana later that evening, Trump singled out Republican Rep. Greg Gianforte and praised him for his assault on a reporter: “Any guy who can do a body slam, he’s my candidate, he’s my guy.”

Does anyone believe that Trump thinks it is “sad” that a Washington Post columnist was allegedly tortured and dismembered, piece by piece, within the walls of the Saudi consulate in Istanbul? And all for 14 billion shekels of silver, dripping from the blood-stained hands of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman into the coffers of Trump’s arms merchants.

The nation that was built on freedom is led by a craven and depraved president.
