  • To the editor:

For most of the 20th century, the key difference between America and other nations like Russia, China and Germany was that America had a moral conscience that reflected the values of its people (“Congress and Western allies demand answers on fate of journalist as Saudi Arabia balks,” Oct. 14).

We were driven to do “the right thing” because of how we defined ourselves as a nation. We weren’t afraid to speak loudly when other nations engaged in clearly atrocious behavior.

Now we have a “businessman president,” and businesses do not have a moral conscience. They can ignore dictators’ human rights violations if they can do business with them. As long as President Trump believes there is money to be made, there will be hardly any consequence for Saudi Arabia’s alleged murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Tell me, how is Trump’s America any different from Vladimir Putin’s Russia if we have lost the moral high ground?

  • Watched the debate last night & Beto O’Rourke, who wants higher taxes and far more regulations, is not in the same league with Ted Cruz & what the great people of Texas stand for & want. Ted is strong on Crime, Border & 2nd A, loves our Military, Vets, Low Taxes. Beto is a Flake!

  • Although the Oct. 13 article “Trump proposal could restrict protesters in D.C.” attaches the proposed restrictions to the National Park Service, this is obviously yet another attempt by the Trump administration to suppress protests. It is what Russia, Saudi Arabia, and other dictator states do. Trump is taking their example.

The sidewalk along Pennsylvania Avenue, the National Mall, and other parks in Washington are owned by the citizens of the country and Washington, D.C. The taxpayers already pay for their maintenance and are quite willing to foot the bill. Trying to charge a fee for their use is outrageous. If the budget for the National Park Service is insufficient to cover the cost of cleanup after protests, then the agency can request an increase in its budget from Congress.

The Trump administration knows that if a fee is charged, many protests will be priced out. First the press is labeled the enemy of the people, and now Trump is attacking the citizens as the enemy of the government.

If the Trump administration doesn’t like the protests, then it should address what the people are protesting about: the lack of democracy.

  • The United States has strongly informed the President of Honduras that if the large Caravan of people heading to the U.S. is not stopped and brought back to Honduras, no more money or aid will be given to Honduras, effective immediately!
