  • So oil derrick Rep. Mike Noel from Kanab wanted to stain our scenic southern Utah byways with the name of the man who emasculated the Bears Ears and Grand Staircase Escalante national monuments, says climate change is a “hoax,” whose EPA director is eviscerating environmental safeguards, inspires ongoing tabloid indiscretions reporting and, to use the words of our esteemed senior senator, continually exhibits “the stupidest, dumbass” behavior we have ever had in the Oval Office.

As Gov. Gary Herbert wisely cautioned, we need to wait to judge the full measure of a person until after they have left office before bestowing name dedication.

The road should be named The Jon M. Huntsman Memorial Highway. His fidelity of character and contributions to our state may never be surpassed.

  • Jeff Jacoby’s column “The ‘scandal-free’ Obama presidency? An urban legend” (Opinion, March 7) is the definition of false parity. Every presidency ends up with a few of its own scandals, and the Obama-era missteps are not to be dismissed. But this—what is going on now under the current administration—is not only unprecedented, it is downright terrifying. I hope that if we survive this travesty of governing, we can return to an administration, warts and all, that will bring us back from the brink.

  • Kim Jong Un talked about denuclearization with the South Korean Representatives, not just a freeze. Also, no missile testing by North Korea during this period of time. Great progress being made but sanctions will remain until an agreement is reached. Meeting being planned!

  • Jeffrey OstlerAlmost three decades have passed since the Supreme Court upheld the Indian Claims Commission’s award of $102 million to the Lakotas. Since then, the award has continued to gain interest. By 2007, the figure was close to $750 million.

Over the years, some Lakotas and other Sioux have argued that the tribes should take the money. Some have suggested that funds be distributed directly to families and individuals; others that they be invested in social programs; still others that they be used to purchase lands in the Black Hills and elsewhere. The large majority of Lakotas, however, continue to believe that accepting the money would be the same as endorsing the legitimacy of the government’s original taking of the Hills. “The Black Hills are not for sale” remains a fundamental tenet of Lakota nationalism.

Note from KBJ: This is a good example of acting on principle.
