To the Editor:
Re “The Confidence Surplus,” by David Brooks (column, Jan. 9), and “The Obama Gap,” by Paul Krugman (column, Jan. 9):
Mr. Brooks says President-elect Barack Obama’s economic plan is too “complex” and tries to do way too much in too short a time.
Mr. Krugman says the plan is “nowhere near big enough.”
Neither side is happy (in this debate over the unknowable). That tells me Mr. Obama is probably pretty close to where he needs to be.
Hmm . . . incurring the wrath of critics across the political spectrum in the service of the public good—that sounds an awful lot like change we can believe in!

Note from KBJ: Suppose President-Elect Barack Obama advocated murdering half the people in New Providence, N.J. Osama bin Laden would like all of them murdered. I would like none of them murdered. Rebecca Spence: "That tells me Mr. Obama is probably pretty close to where he needs to be."
