Why do we call even numbers "even" and odd numbers "odd"? Why not "even" and "uneven," or "odd" and "normal"? Here's my theory. (I have done no research.) If you divide an even number in two, the two groups are the same, i.e., equal, i.e., even. Even numbers divide evenly into two groups, with no remainder. If you try to divide an odd number in two, you get one group with one more than the other. The "one more" is odd, in the sense of being by itself, with no mate from the other group.
I thought about this while showering a few minutes ago. Yes, I'm weird.
