Here is the latest nuttiness from my long-distance telephone company, Credo:

Stick to the Obama Timetable for Iraq

As a candidate, Barack Obama stood out for his opposition to the Iraq war and his commitment to withdraw combat troops in 16 months. As president, he must count on Defense Secretary Robert Gates, a Bush appointee, to make it happen. Some generals, including the commander of forces in Iraq, want more time for the occupation. It's imperative that Gates exercise civilian control over his generals and bring our troops home as Obama promised. This would assure the world of our commitment to peace, save lives and ease the pressure on our depleted treasury.

Would it save lives? If so, whose? Those of Americans? Does Credo care only about Americans? What if, as is likely, withdrawing American troops saves a few American lives (the soldiers who would have died had they stayed) but results in many lost Iraqi lives (those who would have lived had the soldiers stayed)? Is it merely cynicism on my part to think that what really matters to Credo is not Iraqi lives but American dollars, which they would love to spend on domestic social programs?
