Here is a scene from today's final stage of the Tour Down Under. Lance Armstrong finished in a tie for 19th place, 49 seconds behind the overall winner, Allan Davis of Australia. Few experienced cycling observers expected Lance to win the tour, which was his first road race in more than three years. He did well. He's obviously in great shape. He stayed safe (no accidents) and appeared to have fun. Next up for Lance: the Tour of California, beginning on 14 February. Mark my words: The crowds will be huge. Lance Armstrong has the status of a rock star. He may be the most recognized athlete in the world, the way Muhammad Ali used to be.
