One of my readers sent a link to this interesting essay, which every student (especially those who voted for Barack Obama) should read. It reminds me of something I suggested (facetiously) when I was a graduate student. The graduate teaching assistants were being instructed in how to teach, how to assign grades, &c. I mentioned that since the university had an affirmative-action program for blacks and Hispanics, I would cut to the chase and give extra points (say, five for a 100-point exam) to my black and Hispanic students. The professor looked aghast, and yet I'm sure she supported affirmative action. What's the difference between giving blacks and Hispanics preference at the admission stage and giving them preference at the grading stage?
