I happened across this column by Andrew Sullivan, back when he was in love with George W. Bush. The love intensified after the attacks of 9-11. It later died (about the time Dubya came out in favor of the Federal Marriage Amendment). Eventually, it turned to hatred, and still later to seething hatred.
