To the Editor:
It must be perfectly obvious to anyone not a committed partisan or ideologue that the politicians are floundering and that the stimulus and bailout “plans” are 90 percent guesses, desperate hope and prayers and only 10 percent cold analysis.
Is there any history, apart from World War II, where a nation spent itself out of a recession or depression?
Wildly improvident borrowers and lenders over the last two decades, with the politicians of both parties benignly looking on, caused the problem. Perhaps it can best be solved, painfully and over time, by the classic market cure of punishing those who made unwise financial decisions. At least that way, the generation that caused the problem will bear the pain and not pass it on to their progeny with even more debt.
