Al Gore's exaggerated claims about "global warming" are hurting his cause. That is fitting. Please note that science is not a source of values. The job of a scientist is to describe how things are, not prescribe how things should be. Science can tell us (1) whether the globe is warming, (2) if it is, what is causing it, and (3) if it is, what the consequences will be under various scenarios. It cannot tell us whether we should do anything about global warming, if indeed it is occurring. That is a policy question. In a democracy, policy questions are answered by the people (either directly or through their elected representatives). The problem for scientists (and wannabe scientists such as Gore) is that they have become so politicized (perhaps "religicized" is a better word) that the people don't trust them. If scientists want to restore their lost credibility, they will stand far afield from policy questions. Just give us the facts, scientists; we the people will decide what, if anything, to do with them.
