Progressives fear fascism and theocracy. I fear totalitarianism. We are inching toward a society in which dissent from progressive orthodoxy is viewed as a crime. Read Michelle Malkin's latest column if you don't believe me. Recall George Orwell's words: "[T]otalitarianism, if not fought against, could triumph anywhere." Yes, folks, even here, in the United States of America.

Addendum: Here is Glenn Reynolds's Wall Street Journal column. The New York Times is not covering the Tax Day Tea Party. I wonder why. Surely it has nothing to do with bias.

Addendum 2: Finally, well after noon, the New York Times posted a story about the protests. It reads like a press release by the Obama administration. Imagine how the story would have been written if the protests were in favor of homosexual "marriage," affirmative action, or amnesty for illegal aliens. They would be genuine expressions of outrage by an energized, informed, and intelligent populace. By the way, notice the progressive strategy. It is to dismiss the protests as events funded and organized by others, rather than as grassroots events. I don't understand why this matters. Nobody is forced to show up. Who cares whether the Republican Party, Fox News, or some other organization is involved? Why are progressives so conspiratorial? Behind every act or policy they find a sinister interest. Oh wait; that's right out of Karl Marx's play book.
