United States Supreme Court Justice David Souter has announced his retirement, effective at the end of the current term. Here is a New York Times story about possible replacements. Note the emphasis on skin color and genitalia. Who knew that these biological characteristics bore on legal acumen?
Addendum: There's a certain irony, which I am enjoying very much, in the focus on skin color and genitalia. Many of the most prominent progressives in the legal academy are white males. They are effectively being excluded from consideration for the Supreme Court because of characteristics that are beyond their control. It must kill them, though they would never say so. In life, as in horticulture, you reap what you sow.
