Every time I say that conservatives will be the long-term beneficiaries of President Obama's progressive policies, and that this is good, someone says, "I'm worried about the short term." This makes it seem as though conservatives can prevail in both the short term and the long term. I hate to break it to you, but the short term is gone. We conservatives lost the election. We were routed. All we can do at this point is make long-term gains. The best way to do this, in my view, is for President Obama to overreach. Let him pass all the legislation he can, and let him name anyone he pleases to the United States Supreme Court. If the American people are as conservative (or moderate) as I think they are, they will recoil in horror at these moves, once they see their effects, and that will benefit conservatives for many years to come. I'm pleased to see that William Kristol shares my view. See here for his latest column.
