Do you wonder why the editorial board of the New York Times has no credibility? Read this. Key paragraph:
When the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel renders an opinion, it has the force of law within the executive branch. It is obvious when the attorneys in that office under President Bush were asked for their legal opinion on detainee treatment, they did not make a cold, independent judgment. They deliberately contorted the law to justify decisions that had already been made, making them complicit in those decisions.
What is the evidence for the charge that the attorneys "deliberately contorted the law"? The draft report of the Justice Department has not yet been released, according to the Times's own reporters, so the board hasn't read it. The board is engaged in retrospective mind-reading. Who knew that the board members had telepathic powers?
Addendum: Two can play this game. The board members are deliberately contorting the record to justify their belief that Bush-administration attorneys are evil.
