Here is a scene from today's stage of the Giro d'Italia. The winner of the stage was Italian cyclist (and former Giro winner) Danilo Di Luca, who is known as "the killer." He proved today that the name is fitting. In the final kilometer of a long, steep climb, he put on a tremendous burst of speed to catch a late solo breakaway. Nobody could stay with him. Di Luca averaged 23.67 miles per hour on the 100.6-mile stage. Lance Armstrong was dropped by the leading group of riders near the end, but is still highly placed. It's possible that he's sandbagging, but I think he's lacking in fitness and content to ride in support of Levi Leipheimer.
