I just posted grades for my two Ethics courses. That wraps up my 20th year of teaching at the University of Texas at Arlington. I have no idea where the time went. It seems like only yesterday that I walked into my first class (Critical Thinking) in University Hall. Three of my six colleagues in the Department of Philosophy and Humanities were at UTA when I arrived in August 1989. The other three (including our new hire, who starts this fall) were hired after I arrived. I'm going to feel awfully old when I have the most seniority in the department. Let's hope it doesn't happen for another decade. As for when I plan to retire, what's retirement? I love teaching. I could live without committee work, but it's not onerous. Reading and writing are second nature to me. About the only part of my job I dislike is grading student examinations, and that occurs only twice each semester, once in the middle and once at the end. I am now "off" until 25 August. I have many excellent books and articles to read and several scholarly essays to write. In a couple of days, I will have a new summer schedule in place. I like to read in the morning and work at the computer in the afternoon and evening. Do you have any big plans for the summer?
Two Decades
