5-18-89 . . . Odds and ends: (1) Hundreds of Chinese students have gathered in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square to protest governmental corruption and authoritarianism. Many of them have gone on a hunger strike. Since western journalists were in Beijing to cover the [Mikhail] Gorbachev visit, the protest is getting lots of airplay. Come to think of it, that’s probably why the students chose this time to act.
