Here is a scene from today's stage of the Giro d'Italia. British cyclist Mark Cavendish won the stage (his third of this year's Giro), averaging 28.54 miles per hour for 109.3 miles. The stage was mostly flat, but that's an insanely high speed. When you consider how closely the riders are packed, it's amazing that there aren't more crashes. Here is tomorrow's difficult stage. Now that Chris Horner has abandoned the race as a result of a crash, Lance Armstrong is committed to helping his teammate and fellow American Levi Leipheimer win the Giro, so it should be an exciting final nine days. Imagine having a seven-time Tour de France winner pacing you up the steepest mountains.
