In this video, law professor Jonathan Turley comments on the nomination of Sonia Sotomayor. If you read between the lines of his comments and pay attention to the tone of his voice, you see that he is disappointed by the nomination. He can't come out against Judge Sotomayor, obviously, although many conservatives came out against President Bush's choice of Harriet Miers, but he clearly would have preferred a more progressive justice. By that I mean a justice who has a "vision" (his term) of what the law should be, plus a determination to use the judicial position to impose that vision. This, of course, is anathema to conservatives, who believe that judging is not about imposing a vision on the people but about resolving disputes in accordance with law. I also think that Professor Turley is disappointed that someone with experience as a law professor wasn't chosen. Judge Sotomayor did not clerk for a Supreme Court justice after law school and did not serve as a full-time law professor. The fear is that she has not been properly indoctrinated.
