Here is a scene from today's stage of the Giro d'Italia. Spanish cyclist Carlos Sastre won the 101.9-mile stage (his second stage victory of this year's Giro) with an average speed of 22.36 miles per hour. Denis Menchov and Danilo Di Luca continued their epic battle with one another. Menchov is a better time trialist than Di Luca, so Di Luca needs time before Sunday's final stage (a time trial). Today, Di Luca tried several times to get away from Menchov on the final climb of Mount Vesuvius, but Menchov managed to stay on his wheel. Di Luca picked up eight seconds as a time bonus (for finishing third), but he's still 18 seconds behind. He needs to be 18 seconds (or more) ahead. Expect him to attack on the final climb tomorrow, even though it's not long. He has nothing to lose and everything to gain. Here is tomorrow's stage.
