Re “U.S. Report Finds Airstrike Errors in Afghan Deaths” (front page, June 3):

Civilians have always been casualties of war. But this fact makes this reckless deployment of death by the United States military no less reprehensible.

I was raised in a Navy family, and as a young man I worked in the Defense Intelligence Agency; I deeply respect our service people and honor their sacrifices. But it is horrifying to me that Lt. Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal’s primary concern at this slaughter of dozens of innocent people is the political consequence to the military’s “credibility.”

The revealed morality behind that cold calculation shames the nation and further justifies the anger and distrust of those for whom our armed forces are fighting.
