I'm not sure whether I linked to this when I discovered it. Today, finally, I read it carefully. Sam Schulman argues that the institution of marriage is part of a larger institution, kinship, that imposes obligations on spouses that apply only to heterosexual couples. Until recently, nobody gave any thought to the links between marriage and other institutions. These links are still not clearly understood. Schulman's essay is important because it begins to explore these links. I find it curious that progressives, who tell us that we must not intervene in nature lest we disrupt its delicate balance, are so eager to intervene in society. Society is at least as complicated as nature. Shouldn't we be cautious about intervening, therefore, especially when dealing with something as old as marriage? What is the rush to transform it? I don't get it.
