I recently completed my 26th year of teaching, which means I've been teaching for half my life. I taught for five years at the University of Arizona (as a graduate student), for one year at Texas A&M University (while finishing my dissertation), and for 20 years (and counting) at the University of Texas at Arlington. I expect to have 40 years of teaching under my belt by the time I retire. I love teaching.
Twenty years ago today, I read the student evaluations for my spring courses at Texas A&M University. I saved this one (from my upper-level Philosophy of Law course), because it was so bizarre:
Keith—
I would like to thank you for this experience and also tell you that if I was sexually active (which I am not) I would want to have a meaningful physical relationship with you. I am attracted to your intelligence and am impressed by your thoughts.
Thank you—
I haven't looked at a student evaluation in 20 years.
