The editorial board of the New York Times wants to raise taxes. Is anyone surprised? I have an idea. Those who want to raise taxes should write a check to the federal government. I'm serious. It puts money where the person's mouth is, thus demonstrating sincerity; it helps those the person believes need help; and nobody is coerced. The rest of us can exercise our benevolence privately.
