Running The cycling season is winding down. The running season is ramping up. Yesterday, in Grand Prairie, Texas, I did my second footrace of the fall, the Joe Pool Lake 10K (6.214 miles). It was cool and sunny when I arrived at the race site, but uncomfortably warm (60ish) by the time I finished the race at 9:45. The race takes us onto the dam, where we turn around and go back. There were 25 runners ahead of me at the turn and 165 behind me. I kept a steady pace and ended up with an average mile pace of 7:22.88 (elapsed time = 45:52.1), some 11 seconds slower than a year ago on the same course. It was good enough for first place (of 11) in my age group (men 50-54). (See page nine here.) My average heart rate during the race was 148. My maximum was 160. I burned 806 calories.
