To the Editor:

David Brooks does not mention that many graduates—especially those who do postgraduate work—will leave school with six-figure debt.

Many are forced to accept jobs that pay enough to retire their debt. For example, someone might want to practice family medicine (lower paying) but opt for orthopedic surgery (very high paying). I understand that this is the case in other fields, as in the choice between Wall Street and community banking.

Education debt is a major factor in career choice and may be depriving us of some of the best where we need them the most.
