Somebody tell the editorial board of the New York Times that the 13th Amendment applies only within the United States (or to places subject to its jurisdiction). By the way, progressives love to criticize this country for having allowed slavery. What they conveniently fail to point out is that we abolished slavery. Much of the world, as the editorial opinion shows, has not. Does this not make us (morally) exceptional, and wouldn't it be nice of the board to acknowledge that?
