To the Editor:

Your June 23 news article “The Indiana Exception? Yes, but . . .” left the impression of a state full of crumbling communities and unemployed citizens. This is simply not reality.

For example, we have the lowest unemployment rate in the Midwest and the fastest-growing population from Iowa to Maine. We have an AAA credit rating. In 2010, our gross domestic product grew third fastest in the country and more than 50 percent faster than the national average.

We are consistently rated among the top states for business. And we lead all Midwestern states in private-sector job growth.

The reason for this success is simple: while our neighbors responded to the downturn by raising taxes, we chose fiscal responsibility.

Gov. Mitch Daniels recently welcomed another 500 jobs to Indiana from Michigan. Fiscal discipline does pay off, so pardon us if we take exception to your view of “the Indiana exception.”
