Just as there are more homosexuals in the military than people think, there are more conservatives in academia than people think. My advice to prospective graduate students who happen to be conservative is to lie low until they get tenure. Until then, they are at the mercy of progressive thugs. By the way, this explains the obsequiousness of many graduate students, especially in disciplines such as philosophy. Even if they have progressive instincts, they exaggerate their progressivism in order to ingratiate themselves with their superiors. The thought is this: "My supervisor is a progressive. He (or she) can make or break my career. If I broadcast my progressivism and abuse conservatives, I will get in good with my supervisor and thereby enhance my career prospects." Sad but true.
