Federal appellate judge Neil M. Gorsuch has been confirmed by the United States Senate to serve on the United States Supreme Court. He will replace Antonin Scalia, who died a little over a year ago. The Left made ridiculous (and in some cases vile) claims about Judge Gorsuch, some of which implied that the role of an appellate judge is to arrive at certain results (always those approved by the Left) rather than apply the law as written. Admittedly, there are hard cases at law that require appellate judges to draw upon extraneous sources, such as natural law, but the overwhelming majority of cases can and should be resolved by interpreting the law as written. The Left would have you believe that all cases are hard cases. This is result-oriented jurisprudence, which is to say, not jurisprudence at all. Not everything is politics. Judge (soon to be Justice) Gorsuch understands that law is an autonomous institution, with standards, canons of reasoning, canons of interpretation, and methods of its own. As Judge Gorsuch himself put it (I paraphrase), if an appellate judge always likes his or her rulings, then he or she isn't doing the job properly.
