Freedom of the press, that precious, sacred freedom on which our democracy is so dependent for its continuing existence, is continually being derided and threatened by our President Donald J. Trump.
Without freedom of the press, the Nazi symbols displayed at Charlottesville, Va., which President Trump lauded with his “there are good people on both sides,” would have gone unnoticed by all of our citizens.
The plight of undocumented immigrants waiting patiently near San Diego with no food, lodging or sufficient U.S. immigration personnel to promptly consider their request for asylum would have been ignored. Trump even referred haughtily to the situation in a campaign-style speech to his base as “that mess at our border.”
Democracy must be protected. It must be respected. We cannot allow Donald J. Trump to continue as our president. His total disregard for freedom of the press, his preference for authoritarianism, his acceptance of Nazism, his disregard for the plight of people with inadequate income and food and those who are oppressed, his reckless push to eliminate regulations that are essential for the protection of the population, his refusal to acknowledge global warming, his isolationism, his dishonesty, his lack of diplomacy—clearly not the description of a person in whom we should entrust our wonderful United States of America.
Our U.S. Constitution does empower Congress to remove Trump from the presidency. Congress now must act before irreparable harm is done to our wonderful but fragile democracy.
