In the editorial “The United States of Intolerance” (June 27), the PG criticizes the lack of civility and common courtesy in today’s society. The editorial cites examples of liberals and conservatives who, in previous administrations, managed to disagree without being disagreeable—people like Kennedy, Nixon, O’Neill and Reagan, who eschewed ad hominem attacks and, in some cases, even managed to enjoy each other’s company.

What, then, makes today’s atmosphere so vitriolic? Could it be we have a president who encourages and daily indulges in personal slanders, who enjoys creating disparaging and dehumanizing epithets for perceived enemies, and whose actions have shown him to be the most egregious abuser of civil discourse?

“Do we really want everything to be about politics and Donald Trump?”, the PG asks. We all know one person who most definitely does. Let’s hope he has only this term to continue this national nightmare.
