I usually fly the American flag on the Fourth of July, but I didn’t do it this year. I’m ashamed of my country. I’m ashamed of the current treatment of immigrant families for political purposes. I’m appalled that there are those in my country who would undo 80 years of social progress.
I’m frightened and saddened that my country would relinquish its role as a world leader, an exemplary advocate of freedom, democracy and human decency. And I’m disgusted that my country would elect a president who, for many reasons, is so grossly unqualified for the office he holds.
I still believe this is the greatest country in the world, the most successful experiment in self-government of all time. But in the past two years, it has gone badly astray. It needs to correct itself while it still can, while there is still time.
I urge all of my fellow citizens to look at the big picture and think carefully about what is happening.
