Michael D’Antonio writes that Donald Trump “lies because he gets away with it” (“Why does Trump lie so much?” Opinion, July 23). Two days later, the Globe proves this by letting Trump do just that. In the case of an article on Page A6 of the July 25 edition, the headline “Trump says Russians will be pushing for Democrats in ’18” billboards and thus legitimizes a transparently false Trump tweet, while the article merely says his claim was made “without evidence.”

What then follows is a rehash of Russian election meddling and Trump’s Helsinki debacle, but the obvious never gets stated: that the Trump tweet was a blatant lie intended to confuse and deceive. The left excoriates Fox News for propagating Trump’s untruths, but is there any difference when the progressive media fail to call him out?

Whether a sin of commission or omission, the result is the same: Trump lies and gets away with it because the media, whether conservative or progressive, enable him.
