Today was my first day of fall classes. I'm starting my 30th year at the University of Texas at Arlington. I teach Logic at eight o'clock and Social and Political Philosophy at 9:30, Tuesdays and Thursdays. The focus of the latter course will be John Stuart Mill's 1859 classic, On Liberty, which is as important today as it was when it was published. (Actually, with the advent of the totalitarian Left, it's more important.) We will be reading the fourth edition of 1869, which was the last edition to appear during Mill's lifetime (1806-1873).
