Donald Trump’s affinity for golf courses may shed some light on the Trump-John Kelly-Stephen Miller view of immigration, which sees uniformity as an ideal. If you’ve ever tried to maintain a lawn, you know that it requires great care—and often many poisons. The result is easy on the eyes but generally not very interesting. That’s why we usually choose a walk in the woods, rather than a walk on the lawn. Nature prefers diversity, and so should we. That we’ve managed to do so in the past is one of the reasons our country has thrived.
