On Sept. 11, President Donald Trump took time from his busy(?) schedule to memorialize a tragic event that happened in our nation 17 years ago—a disaster that saw the lives of almost 3,000 citizens dashed that day.
Since then, the country has been in deep mourning.
The U.S. as a whole rallied around the survivors and first responders; museums and markers were dedicated; and New York, Washington, D.C., and Somerset County, Pa., were praised for their resilience.
Mr. Trump also took this day, with a major hurricane approaching his Southern voting bloc, to recall another storm from just one year ago. Puerto Rico was struck with a severe combination of storms that took the lives of 3,000 Americans. He gave his administration top marks for its response (an “incredible, unsung success”)—even though he still has not acknowledged the terrible loss of life, the contradictory effort that went into the relief effort and the thousands left without power for months. He implied at the time that the island wasn’t even hit with a “real catastrophe like Katrina.”
Now he seems to be hoping this new storm will be even bigger “and very, very wet,” so that he can ride to the rescue just before the midterms. He probably will be anxiously awaiting the good news at one of his many golf resorts.
