In the course of his angry defense, Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh uttered this astonishing charge: “This whole two-week effort has been a calculated and orchestrated political hit, fueled with apparent pent-up anger about President Trump and the 2016 election. Fear that has been unfairly stoked about my judicial record, revenge on behalf of the Clintons and millions of dollars in money from outside left-wing opposition groups.”

Equal parts partisan and paranoid, this statement should have been enough to immediately disqualify Judge Kavanaugh from consideration for the court.

The fact that he still has solid Republican support raises an interesting question: Do the Republicans want to pack the court with hardline right-wingers who will allow gerrymandering and voter suppression? It may be the only way the Republicans can stay in power.
