In her column “I’m engaged in an evil enterprise with every click, and I can’t stop” (Opinion, Dec. 3), Margery Eagan equates our participation in less-than-scrupulous commercial empires (Amazon, Facebook, Apple) with Donald Trump’s moral and ethical digressions. Hardly.

We can easily choose to shop locally, unplug from social media, or keep the same phone for a few years, without having undone decades of progress on multiple social and environmental fronts, endangering vulnerable populations, or destroying relationships across the globe.

It is imperative that citizens, and particularly fine journalists like Eagan, continue to question and challenge reckless power despite our own shortcomings.
