Red Sox manager Alex Cora is to be congratulated on his display of leadership in choosing not to visit the White House (“Cora to skip White House event for Sox,” Page A1, May 6). As a Red Sox fan since 1946, I’ve taken comfort in the new ownership’s sharp break with the club’ s tolerance and promotion of racism in the previous century. That progress is clouded by the respectability now bestowed upon the most racist, xenophobic, and narcissistic president since, at least, Andrew Johnson and perhaps ever.
The Red Sox never should have agreed to dirty the club’s reputation by meeting with this man, and shouldn’t have put Cora and others in the position of acting on their own.
