Just when I thought Donald Trump couldn’t stoop any lower in his tirades about perceived enemies, he surprised me again (“Trump says he didn’t know plan for warship: Still takes swipes at Sen. McCain,” Page A4, May 31). In his recent chat with the press outside the White House, he reminded us of his utter dislike, or hatred, of the late John McCain.

McCain was a true patriot and war hero who was imprisoned and tortured for years during the Vietnam War. When he was finally released and returned to this country, he continued to devote his life to the betterment of the United States by becoming a US representative and then a senator. To have Trump, who himself received five military deferments, disparage this distinguished man is just unacceptable and beneath the dignity of the office of the president of the United States.

I consider Trump an embarrassment to this country. He has made us the laughingstock of the world.

Note from KBJ: You have it backward, Patricia. John McCain was the embarrassment to this country. Since when does getting captured by the enemy make you a war hero? Thank God for Donald Trump!
