Thanks for the interesting history lesson on Congressional impeachment proceedings provided in “Dems’ Lofgren has seen this all before” (Dec. 12). It’s fascinating that Rep. Zoe Lofgren, D-San Jose, holds the unique status of being the only lawmaker to have a role in the impeachments of three presidents: Richard Nixon, Bill Clinton and Donald Trump.

I’m glad that Lofgren pointed out that her vote against impeaching Clinton in 1998 was because his lying about an affair with an intern was simply bad behavior, while Trump’s attempt to use a foreign power to enhance his re-election prospects is a threat to the constitutional balance of power. Given Lofgren’s long history with the impeachment process and her experience as an attorney, I trust her judgment that the direct evidence is very damning, and her message to both Congress and the American public: “We need to proceed.”

Note from KBJ: Let me get this straight: Clinton commits a crime but is not impeachable; Trump doesn't commit a crime but is impeachable. O-kay.
