Vice President Mike Pence’s visit to the VFW Post 128 in Beaver surprises me (Dec. 11, “Pence Stumps in Pa.”). I thought that veterans service organizations were supposed to be politically neutral. As we reflect at this time of year on the valor and sacrifices of our veterans on the 75th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, some veterans support a president who was a draft dodger, disrespects our prisoners of war, John McCain and Gold Star families. Mr. Trump has no respect for military ethics and rules of warfare in the Navy Seal case. He claimed bone spurs and failed to take the oath unlike those heroes at Omaha Beach and the Hurtgen Forest.
Mr. Pence remarked that this administration has done more for veterans than any in the past. This administration and all veterans, particularly those in Congress and on the Veterans Affairs committees, should draw their attention to supporting our military and their families, particularly in light of reports of mold, mildew and rodents in military housing units. Where is the money going? Did defense money go for the “wall”? We should be building new military housing instead of building a wall.
I hope that I don’t read that the VFW is going to have its next convention at the Mar-a-Largo Club in Florida or the Trump Hotel in Washington, D.C. I heard that Donald Trump doesn’t pay his bills or honor his contracts.
