Yesterday evening, Katherine and I watched The King's Speech (2010), which neither of us had seen. We watched it at home on DVD, as part of our attempt to watch all the Academy-Award-winning films since Midnight Cowboy in 1969. The King's Speech won Best Picture and Colin Firth Best Actor for his role as King George VI. (He ascended to the throne near the end of the movie.) The movie was riveting, especially as I was unaware of the historical situation regarding this king. The acting was very good. It must have been hard for Firth to pretend to be a stammerer, but he pulled it off. Geoffrey Rush was superb as the voice coach and Helena Bonham Carter was impressive as the future king's wife. In a way, this was a buddy movie, like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and Midnight Cowboy. I like buddy movies.
Here is the trailer.
