Yesterday evening, Katherine and I watched Selma (2014), which we rented on Amazon Prime. I know a lot about the events in Birmingham in 1963, having taught Martin Luther King's famous "Letter from Birmingham Jail" many times, but until yesterday I didn't know much about the events in Selma in 1965. The movie was excellent, with great acting, powerful scenes, and poignant music. King is one of my heroes. I love the fact that he emphasized nonviolent disobedience. King understood that change is quicker and more durable when it appeals to conscience rather than to fear. Today's thugs have a lot to learn from him.
