Re: July 5 commentary, “We face difficult days, no matter November’s outcome.”
There is more than a little irony in Joe Biden’s run for president. This is the third time and he has a good chance of succeeding. But the U.S. will not be anything like the nation he earlier sought to lead.
President Trump will have left Biden with a nation much the poorer for his four years in office. The coronavirus, sweeping discontent with race relations, terrible international relations, and more are left in Trump’s wake. What’s more, the tools of government, such as a strong diplomatic corps, good finances, and an engaged and able electorate, will be gone or severely weakened.
If Biden wins, I expect there to be dancing in the streets but, alas, the party will soon be over.
